Developing My Career: work opportunities and scholarships for Māori students

Healthcare is a hugely rewarding career if you want to work in an industry focused on helping people.

Healthcare workers and support staff are always in demand and are well paid for their work. Having a career in the health industry is not just about becoming a doctor or a nurse. There are many career paths in healthcare including IT, administration, management, education and more.

One of our key objectives is to get more Māori into healthcare and to develop the careers of current healthcare workers to better understand the cultural needs and health concerns of Māori people. From scholarships for Māori students, to work experience and job vacancies, we can provide you with a continuous path for career development from school to retirement.

Step 1

Job Vacancies

Tūruki connects Māori workers to clinical and non-clinical jobs at the Hawke’s Bay District Health Board. As one of the largest employers in Hawke’s Bay, the DHB provides many rewarding jobs and a career path for life.

Our clinical and non-clinical vacancies can be found on the HBDHB website. Vacancies in the Māori workforce sector can be viewed on the Mahi website.

Step 2

Get Funding

Tūruki provides scholarships for Māori people wanting to start a career in the health industry and to help develop the careers of current healthcare workers.

You can find more information about the types of scholarships and funding available from our scholarships page.

Step 3

Work Experience

Tūruki can help you gain work experience with the Hawke’s Bay District Health Board. This is a great way to find out what jobs are available in the health industry.

Working as a volunteer, you’ll get the opportunity to spend time in the workplace, learn new skills and decide on a career path that’s right for you. Work experience also helps to make you more employable.
